Shall we give up our homes, family to follow God?

Question from a email to me:
"Can you tell me what Mark 10: 21-25 is saying? Every since high school God has given me these verses when times are tough. "

Lets start at the top of the story and go slowly through it:
17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” 18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’[a]
20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” 21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him,

Here we have this young rich man, who sees Jesus and wants to inherit eternal life.  He sites how "good" he has been, but of course Jesus says NO one is good but God.  Telling the young man HE , Jesus Is God.  But of course I do not think this young man really understood that at the time.   I esp. like how it says, "Jesus LOVED Him"  remember that.  Jesus loves this young man and Jesus knew he would not follow at this time.

and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

But why does Jesus tell this young man this?  Let us go on:

23 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches[b] to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” 27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

Here is what my study bible says:
"THOSE WHO HAVE RICHES", frequently also are those who TRUST in money, a dangerous condition for one seeking spiritual life. This comparison of a camel going through a needle is a literal one in human terms.  It is IMPOSSIBLE not just difficult.   But is is also impossible for anyone at all to be saved apart from God's Grace and power. God provides the means of salvation, enlightens the sinners understanding and regenerates the believing soul.
The one who has left all these things has not necessarily renounced them, but has certainly reordered his priorities . Peter still had his wife, after 25 yrs as did the other apostles and Jesus's brothers.  Many times however they made heavy sacrifices for the sake of Christ and the Gospel message.

So in a nut shell, it is my belief;

God loves you and I Greatly !  He is saying to us, that we are not to put our confidence in what money or man can do, but for us to put all our confidence in HIM.  To say we trust God and then worry and fret so much over our health insurance or where the next dollar will come from is not trusting in God.  WE rely on either what we see, feel or hear, or we rely on God.  Faith is not believing something we know is there, but what we do not know .  Seeing is not believing, BELIEVING is seeing.

God is NOT telling us to sell our home, leave our mates, but to trust in Him in All things.  That even our FAITH is a gift from God and That God knows we have weak faith.  But if we pray continually for Him to teach us, to provide for us, etc, He will be there for every single thing.

God can do anything right?  IF God wanted , he could send you so much money that you and every child of yours could live without working till the end of your days.  But He does not, why? Obviously because we need to learn something in the circumstance we are in.  God has not forgot us, God never forsakes a called and surrendered child.  So our conclusion is that we are Right where we should be, and we need to wait and trust God for the rest.

NOTE: Let me inject, that God may well be Telling YOU ( one who is reading this) to Leave your home and go serve the Lord.  Only you and God will know what God wants for you.  This takes much prayer and fasting.  Do not take mans word, but follow God's advice for you.  But I can say, if you are married with children, God has a duty for you right where you are! Single men/ woman may be hearing God calling them into service.  There are many ways to serve God.  The whole point is to be so close to God you will KNOW what He is saying to you.
