The Promise of Rest

We all would like peace and harmony in our lives.  We seek , yes we yearn for a day each week or a hour each day to find some quiet and soul rest.  We worry about how to pay our bills, the gas is so high we must make more cuts in the budgets, Relationships are in turmoil, crime goes up, tempers flair.

So what is this Promise of Rest, God was talking about?
First we must understand the verse above chapter four at the end where it says,
"so we see they did not enter in Because of UNBELIEF"  Of course this is talking about #1 when the children of Israel left Egypt, the ones who did not believe then died during the 40 years because they would not  go in to the promise land.  (If you have not read this story, you should to better understand what this chapter is about)

But it is also talking about a Spiritual Rest!  Something other than the rest of the Israelites, something more than a single day of rest like for Sabbath.  Remember God does layers of things in everything He does.

Hebrews 4

The Promise of Rest
1 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them,[a] not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. 3 For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said:

“ So I swore in My wrath,

‘ They shall not enter My rest,’”[b]

So there is a rest that is GOD's Rest.  The Lexicon results of rest says, "a putting to rest, calming of the winds, a resting place, actively putting to rest, day of rest, sabbath etc.

In the seven days of creation, God rested from all his work on the seventh day.  Marking a sabbath rest.  But in the big picture, the seven days mark the 7 segments of the plan of God.  There are 7 annual HOLY days GOD instituted in the old testament that also portray the plan of God for Mankind. I have talked about them before.  God would not have wanted the people of Israel to keep those days unless they were of great meaning to GOD.  By learning about them, one can then use them as a stepping stone to the Awesome Plans for mankind, but here in the trek from Egypt ( a metaphor of sin and living your life YOUR way, living in darkness without truth) to the Promised land. ( a sign of God's Way of living, a Blessed way, a abundant way, the true way, a way of light) Many of these DID NOT BELIEVE, after all the obstacles along the way that God performed miracle after miracle they doubted at the very end!  Thus they, (the doubters, died)  They did not enter the rest of the promised land just as you and I will not enter the rest God has planned if we DOUBT or disbelieve the truth of God.

I have a study bible, New King James Version and the side notes say:

"The tragic unbelief of the desert generation of Israelites (3:7-19) serves as a warning for believer's today to enter into God's rest, which is still offered today to the faithful.  The gospel was preached is the translation of a single Greek word meaning "the good news was announced" The good news of God's Rest.  "
 continue on:

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”;[c] 5 and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”[d]
6 Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, 7 again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

“ Today, if you will hear His voice,

Do not harden your hearts.”[e]

So we see The rest is a sabbath rest, the seventh day was btw, a saturday by all

Studies That I have found.  But again it is MORE than that too, for the seventh

day is a sign of the future plan of God, a Rest of being physical, living a physical

life in this body to a spiritual life in a spiritual body after the resurrection.  Yes! It

it is a Part of

God's plan for us to become Spirit beings in His World Tomorrow. But lets

continue:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

My Study bible says this about this word, "Rest" in this sentence marked (9) above:

"The Greek word 'rest' in this verse is different from the word used in  the other verses, . This word means "sabbath rest" and is found only here in the NT. Jews commonly taught the sabbath foreshadowed the world to come and they spoke of a "day that shall be all sabbath".
***********************************
A time when every day you live as if it is the sabbath.  A time where every moment God is your full attention, your breath, your focus.  Continual praise and someday peace and rest like no other ever experienced.

11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom wemust give account.

Our Compassionate High Priest

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

In closing I would like to mention a movie I watched last night.  It was put out by National Geographic I believe, and called "God Grew tired of Us" you can find it on netflix or amazon.  A story of the lost boys of Sudan, Sudanese refugees John, Daniel and Panther have found their way to America, where they experience electricity, running water and supermarkets for the first time. Capturing their wonder at things Westerners take for granted, this documentary,

Watch it and see what the one man John says about santa claus and some of our american habits! Think about it then, and ponder.
