Irresponsible Shepherd's or Who do you follow?
The shepherd's in Ezekiel 34, are a metaphor for Israel's political leaders, and spiritual church leaders. They apply for today as well. And Israel is for all of those called by God as His children. These leaders are accused by God of forsaking the main purpose of Godly leadership. They are self serving not serving the people.
The chapter of 34 reads:
1Then the word of the LORD came to me saying,
2"Son of man, prophesy against the (A)shepherds of Israel Prophesy and say to those shepherds, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe, shepherds of Israel who have been (B)feeding themselves! Should not the shepherds (C)feed the flock?
3"You (D)eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool, you (E)slaughter the fat sheep without feeding the flock.
4"Those who are sickly you have not strengthened, the diseased you have not healed, (F)the broken you have not bound up, the scattered you have not brought back, nor have you (G)sought for the lost; but with force and with severity you have dominated them.
5"They were (H)scattered for lack of a shepherd, and they became (I)food for every beast of the field and were scattered.
6"My flock (J)wandered through all the mountains and on every high hill; (K)My flock was scattered over all the surface of the earth, and there was (L)no one to search or seek for them."'
Sadly, we have few good shepherds to lead the people today. How many really care for the masses, or even try to teach them the true ways of God? How many church leaders seem to lavish much upon themselves and yet never forget to remind the people to give more to the church. Many love to condemn the people when they do the very same things they condemn others for.
Or how many political leaders make decisions based on getting themselves re-elected not on what will best benefit the people? Saying whatever they think the people want to hear, but making decisions that will insure themselves big paychecks and or prestige? Look at the resent leader in Africa, or some of the other radical ones in power who kill and mistreat the very ones they are responsible for?
Is it not up to every leader of any kind to be held accountable to God for how they lead? They are. We should never forget to pray for our leaders, even when they are far from doing right. Humble ourselves and pray for even our enemies who hate us and do not even really know why they hate us. Why? Because this is what Jesus did. The actions of every single person will be judged by God, as the rest of chapter 34 says:
7Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
8"As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "surely because My flock has become a (M)prey, My flock has even become food for all the beasts of the field for lack of a shepherd, and My shepherds did not search for My flock, but rather the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock;
9therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD:
10'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am (N)against the shepherds, and I will demand My sheep from them and make them (O)cease from feeding sheep So the shepherds will not feed themselves anymore, but I will (P)deliver My flock from their mouth, so that they will not be food for them."'"
So, What do we do? I tell you the truth, you can not go wrong by putting God in the leader seat. Learn from the bible, study it daily. KNOW what the scriptures say and when you go to church, you will know if you are being led by truth or some persons vanity. If you pray always to learn truth, will not God provide it? he most certainly will! Keep praying to be protected from false leaders, and be aware of God's truth from man's. But if you are naive and just listen to any leader, and not try to know the truth yourself, you will fall for anything.
We cannot change who our leaders are, but God can. When you put all your trust into God, you cannot fail in truth. The truth really does set you Free!
