Do you try too hard to be good?

As I pulled the motor home onto Hwy 38, my eyes saw a huge sign on a truck going by.  It was
Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD
       will renew their strength.
       They will soar on wings like eagles;
       they will run and not grow weary,
       they will walk and not be faint.

I was leaving a home, and not knowing where my next dwelling place might be.  For the next year, I had no home.  We lived in a RV.  At every turn, it seemed God was telling me this verse.  Now, apx 13 yrs later.  I am still understanding what God was telling me through this one verse.  At that time so long ago, I was devastated, and feeling lost.  But ALL things that happen to us, are allowed for our growth and ultimately our good!  In time I had renewed hope, was given a new home, a new purpose and I am much happier today than if I had stayed where I was that day long ago.

Now, I am learning too, that this verse also means that without God, it does not matter how much you try to be "good". We will never be good until God changes us through the circumstances of our lives. (and are spiritually changed, at the resurrection)  We all have a destiny to follow.  We choose some paths to that destiny with more rocks than others.  But it still leads to a point in time where God meets us.

Too many people, esp. Christians, try to be perfect on their own power.  They all burn out at some time when they do this.  For ALL of us sin.  We are weak and easily overcome by the three S's.  Self, Society and Satan.

What this verse is also showing us is, it is God that renews us.  When we finally come to the end of ourselves we find that it is God that does the changing. So don't fret about wether you will "make it".  That is God's responsibility to make sure you get to the point He is taking you.  This is of course for those who have willingly  surrendered their will to Him!

You will not be perfect by following tons of strict sets of do and don'ts.  Laws made by man in heavy burdens of self righteousness.  God's laws are simple.  Don't steal, don't kill, don't commit adultery, etc.  These are just the beginning to help those who do not know right from wrong start to understand "HOLY" God.

You cannot make the world keep all the rules you have decided is what makes a good christian or not.  For it is within the heart that the secret lies.  Who are the true followers of Christ and who are not.  Only God knows them.  You and I do not.  We would do well to leave the Judgement of man to God.  Who are YOU to condemn even one soul without knowing what God has planned for that one?

There is the part in the bible that says we are to judge within the church.  That is in the new testament.  I will not cover that today, but I warn you, I warn us all, to be very careful who you condemn, for as you judge so shall you be judged.  Besides, have you forgotten so soon, my brother, or sister in Christ, where you were and what you used to do before God called and saved you?
Who were the people who loved you before you knew God?  Who by loving one another has ever turned away people from learning to know Christ except the very ones suppose to be following Christ! More "christians" turn away the lost by being so judgmental and lacking patience than any other group!

We are NOT to do as the heathen do, (killing, stealing,lying, etc) but we are commanded to LOVE one another.  Hate the SIN, Love the sinner.  We judge others by what they watch on TV, or movies they go too, or books they read.  We judge others by what they eat, or what day they go to church.  We judge others by what clothes they wear or how much they give at church. The list goes on and on.

Get the PLANKS out of your own eyes and be perfect, then maybe you can help your brother with his.  Oh, yea, we cannot be perfect yet, so where does that leave us?  On our knees praying to God.  Pray for your brother who needs help. Love him and know what LOVE Looks and acts like.
