Fasting....... WHY?

Fasting. Going without food and water, or without food . Not many people like to fast.
In my opinion not many people understand fasting. When I was first baptized, I was in a church that fasted. First was for Atonement a day of Fasting to draw near to God and be AT-ONE with God ATONE MENT. Atoning for our sins.
(Original Middle English (originally in the sense [make or become united or reconciled,] rare before the 16th cent.): from at one in early use; later by back-formation from atonement .)
So this fasting was to become reconciled and or united with God again. Not separated by sin any more.

Then we have personal fasting, where a single person will fast or a group may fast.
But what I want to know is WHY are you fasting? let me first have you read quickly through these verses:

1. Isaiah 58:1
[ True Fasting ] "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins.
Isaiah 58:1-3
(in Context) Isaiah 58 (Whole Chapter)

2. Isaiah 58:3
'Why have we fasted,' they say, 'and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?' "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.
Isaiah 58:2-4
(in Context) Isaiah 58 (Whole Chapter)

3. Isaiah 58:4
Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.
Isaiah 58:3-5

Apparently if we fast for the wrong reasons God does not see it. Does not acknowledge it. WHY?

Do we think God does not hear every prayer we pray?

Do we think God does not know every circumstance in our lives?

Have you read the whole bible through yet, and noticed how many times it will say, GOD did this or that? Like when King Davids baby was struck with illness, who did that? GOD did. And God let the baby die. WHY? Because a lesson was to be learned by all involved. David was a man after God's own heart. But God let the baby die. Read the whole story to see how David reacted after his fasting.

My point is to point us to the fact that fasting is NOT

1. To Get God to Do anything. He is not our own personal genie in a bottle. This all goes back to the real meaning of HOLY too. If we learn more what Holy God is, we understand more of How God Does things.

READ what kind of Fasting God wants:

Isaiah 58:5-7

5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for a man to humble himself?
Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed
and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD ?

6 "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Here God is telling us to change! Change our character, our ways of living, from sin and rebellion to true belief and trust in Him. To think of others, to quit being selfish. To quit living in SIN!

But when we do fast, we should have the right point of mind. Is your son or daughter ill? Do not pray for your will but His Will. Not to say we are not going to cry out for them to be healed but what I am trying to say is IF God decided they will not heal, will you quit believing? So why not surrender your will, whatever it is to accept His Good and PERFECT will? Can Not God decide what is BEST? Do we know more than GOD?

I am human, and with it all the weakness that goes with being human. I want MY way, and have a stubborn mind. But God is speaking to me to learn and grow beyond myself. To TRUST and BELIEVE HIM no matter what.

What Fasting does do is:

1. Pull us out of our daily routines where there is so much noise and confusion we can be quiet and hear God.

2. Repent of our sins, and correct our attitudes and direction we are going

3. Be reconciled to God spend quality time alone with Him.

Fasting is to turn from sin. Our Sin.

2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (New American Standard Bible)

13"(A)If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people,

14(B)and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
